Discover which sofa material is right for you with DFS
Is there anything quite as exciting as new sofa day? We certainly don’t think so!
A new sofa brings a rare opportunity to refresh your space with the sink-in, sumptuous seating set-up of your dreams - but choosing one isn’t always an easy task. After all, a well-maintained sofa can be sitting pretty for 15 years - an awfully long time to suffer a colour catastrophe or a measuring muddle!
One of the most important decisions when it comes to choosing a sofa is finding an upholstery material that’s right for you and your home. From the smooth luxury of velvet to confidently classic cotton, there are all sorts of fabrics available with benefits to each. Read on for more information about some of our favourite sofa materials.
Velvet sofas
Luxury and glamour abounds when you choose a velvet sofa. Much loved for their soft and smooth texture that shines in any space, velvet and crushed velvet sofas promise a plush, sumptuously soft sit that takes your lounging to the next level and makes your home feel a little more Hollywood.
Velvet sofas are hard to beat in the staying power department - a staple of glitz and glam in the early 1900s, velvet’s celebrity status was firmly established in the soft luxury of the 60s and 70s and persists today, effortlessly slotting into endless trending styles from feminine opulence to enchanting maximalism and everything in between.
Perfect for…
Those looking for a showstopping centrepiece to add wow factor to their front room. Velvet pairs practicality with luxury, and makes a great choice for bright and bold colours with high impact.
Colours we love
Searching for statement style? Velvet has you covered. A velvet sofa’s high sheen and smooth visage make it a great choice for showcasing bold colours as an eye-catching centrepiece. We love jewel tones like rich, opulent greens and deep blues, bright and shiny pops of red, and the understated luxury of black and grey.
Clean and care
Though lavish, velvet sofas are surprisingly durable and more family friendly than you may think. Velvet is a tightly woven fabric with no loose or long threads for mischievous cats and dogs to get their paws on and, though it does attract pet hair, it’s relatively easy to keep clean. With the right care, it can stand the test of time and toddlers alike - we recommend dabbing stains to avoid ruining the texture, and using a soft brush in the direction of the nap to keep your velvet sofa looking good as new.

Boucle sofa
Looking for cosiness that’s bang on trend? Boucle is the material on everyone’s minds right now - and for good reason. Cosy, contemporary and versatile, a boucle sofa is sure to make a statement in any space.
Also known as a teddy sofa for its super snuggle able look, a boucle sofa boasts a unique matte tactile texture that’s visible from across the room. While it’s particularly popular at the moment, designers have been keen on boucle since the 1970s, so there’s no need to fret about it falling out of fashion. Quite the opposite in fact - modern technology means boucle is more durable than ever, and indulgent interiors like quiet luxury and the cosy curve trend prove there’s no time like the present to introduce a boucle sofa bed, corner or cuddler into your home.
Perfect for…
A touch of textural interest that makes a softer statement. Boucle is cosy to the core and looks especially luxe in lighter tones for sink-in comfort that doesn’t sacrifice sleek style.
Colours we love
Boucle sofas are loved for their luxe, simple style, so it’s no surprise that timeless lighter neutrals like cream and ivory are the colours that come on top of the charts. Boucle’s eye-catching nubby weave is perfect for adding intrigue in a space that’s more monochromatic, offering a pop of texture rather than a pop of colour, meaning brighter and bolder tones are rarer - but not impossible! And for those of you worried about keeping a cream sofa clean, darker shades of greys, tans and blacks are often an option.
Clean and care
Despite its luxurious appearance and super soft feel, boucle is remarkably low maintenance. Modern boucle is crafted from durable polyester yarn for longer lasting lounging that’s fit for all the family - but paw-rents should consider that its delightfully lumpy texture holds more pet hair than other sofa fabrics. Brushing regularly with a soft brush should take care of this, and boucle’s low liquid absorption means quick spot cleans will take care of most spills and stains.
Faux Leather sofas
The luxurious look and softness of a leather sofa at a more affordable price - it’s no surprise that faux leather sofas are so popular. Loved for its low maintenance appeal and versatility, faux leather is a man-made fabric with plenty of pros over its natural counterpart, including a protective UV-resistant topcoat, its wipe-clean surface, and cruelty-free production.
Faux leather sofas, or pleather sofas as they’re sometimes known, first appeared in our living rooms in the early 20th century, introducing the handsome, heritage style of a leather sofa to the wider market. Advances in upholstery technology since then have seen the faux leather sofa become a staple of the British family home, offering a budget-friendly addition to modern trends like colour drenching and 1970s Fleetwood style.
Perfect for…
Those searching for the luxury of leather without the price tag. Faux leather is an affordable, often cruelty-free alternative that stands up to busy family life for classic, low-maintenance style.
Colours we love
Classic British tan, luxe charcoal black, timelessly neutral natural - any colour you’d associate with luxurious leather looks just as elegant on a faux leather sofa! The natural sheen and smooth texture suits rich, dark tones if you’re creating an opulent, old money vibe in your living room, but the versatility of faux leather means bold and bright reds, blues and greens are a fantastic option, too.
Clean and care
A faux leather sofa requires less upkeep than its genuine leather alternative - but that doesn’t mean you can ignore it entirely. Though it can be prone to peeling and cracking due to the nature of its production, faux leather is relatively durable when cared for correctly and a practical choice for families with kids and pets thanks to its stain and scratch-resistant properties. Spot cleaning and faux leather conditioning will keep your faux leather sofa in good nick.

Jumbo cord sofa
When you say cosy, we think jumbo cord. Thick ribbed channels of raised pile in classic corduroy stripes - a jumbo cord sofa promises an irresistibly soft and unparalleled plush texture for sink-in seating.
Corduroy has been cool since the days of Ancient Egypt, but its popularity skyrocketed thanks to the casual and colourful trends of the 1970s. From jeans to jackets and now to some of our cosiest corner sofas, corduroy adds both visual and textural allure with its recognisable striped pattern and luxuriously soft raised tufting. But don’t mistake comfort for fragility - jumbo cord is a thick and surprisingly durable fabric that’s more resistant to wear and tear than similar softer materials. It stands the test of time too, lending itself to popular modern interiors such as cosy cottage core and sumptuous slow living.
Perfect for…
Uncompromising cosiness fit for frantic family life. Jumbo cord is as soft as they come, with thick, plush ribbed channels, yet surprisingly resilient to stains, spills and scratches - ideal for a busy home.
Colours we love
Like its wearable counterparts, a cord sofa looks chic in all sorts of shades and tones. The cosy plush style of this fabric lends itself particularly well to lighter colours; a light blue or green jumbo cord sofa makes a softer statement in any family home, while blush pink or yellow suits a stylish spring space. Channeling the suave 70s? A luxurious burnt orange cord sofa might be just what you’re after, but more neutral, easy-to-style colours like off-whites and beiges are just as wonderful for long-term versatility.
Clean and care
With its irresistibly soft and cosy exterior, you might be forgiven for thinking a jumbo cord sofa would be a high maintenance, short-lived choice - but that’s not the case! Cord and jumbo cord is surprisingly resilient against scratchy four-legged friends and sticky toddler fingers, offering a durable, family-friendly centrepiece should you care for it properly. Weekly brushing with a soft brush in the direction of the nap and spot cleaning spills will help to keep your cord sofa in tip top condition
Chenille fabric sofa
Soft to touch, durable, and effortlessly versatile, there’s a reason chenille sofas are so popular. This indulgent fabric suits any colour, style, and space, promising a cosy spot to curl up in for studio lovers and full families alike.
French for ‘caterpillar’ as a nod to its fuzzy threads, chenille was originally considered a fabric for only the most luxurious of lounges, loved by the Parisian elites for its elegant, high sheen finish. That decadence has stood the test of time to grace our modern interiors, now more affordable in a variety of shapes and silhouettes, feeling right at home in every style from enchanted maximalism to colourful nostalgic chic.
Perfect for…
Those indulging in quality comfort and elegant style. Chenille is unquestionably cosy with a luxurious look thanks to sheen in the fabric that promises a rich, multitonal visage across the sofa.
Colours we love
Just about any colour will look good on your chenille fabric sofa. Rich jewel tones and bright shades look particularly lavish with chenille’s natural high sheen, but more neutral colours are perfect for adding understated elegance to your decor. We love a deep forest green or versatile greige to transform your cosy space.
Clean and care
For all its luxurious appeal, you may be thinking that a chenille fabric sofa would be incredibly delicate and hard to clean. But worry not! Chenille is surprisingly durable and makes a great choice for families, but its lovely looping threads do have the potential to be snagged and should be carefully considered by parents of paws and claws. Chenille sofas look their best when brushed weekly with a soft brush, with spills and stains taken care of quickly by dapping with a clean microfibre cloth.
