Why do I need a headboard?

You don’t have to have a headboard for your bed - but most people prefer one, for a variety of practical and aesthetic reasons. An upholstered headboard adds an extra level of comfort to your bed, helps to prevent damage to your wall, and support both you, and your pillows - so no more disappearing pillows down the back of the bed at night! As well as practicality, headboards add a lot of style to your bedroom, creating a more defined bed area.

Where should a headboard sit?

The headboard of your bed should sit securely against a solid wall, if possible. You always want the support of a wall behind you, so avoid windows behind the head of the bed if you can. Make sure your headboard is securely attached (either to the bed or the wall) and, whenever possible, opt for a headboard slightly wider than your bed. For a clean look, the bottom edge of your headboard shouldn't be seen when looking at your bed, so you should ensure the headboard is a few inches lower than the top of your mattress.

How to install a headboard

While some headboards are designed to be fitted to the bed frame, others are meant to be mounted to the wall. All of our headboards at DFS come with full assembly or fitting instructions, and it’s important to make sure yours is secured safely.

What headboards are in style now?

With so many more options now available across home interiors, there’s more headboard styles to choose from than ever before. Some of the most popular headboard styles include:

Buttoned headboards - upholstered headboards with fabric button detail, creating a plush, glamorous or more traditional look

Tufted headboards - similar to button headboards, but without the buttons, offering a more modern look

Art deco headboards - incorporating curved or geometric shapes for timeless elegance

Mid century headboards - simple, minimally detailed headboards for a clean aesthetic

Modern headboards - often eschew fussy detailing or use square panels for a contemporary space

Why were headboards invented?

We can trace the history of headboards in the UK back to medieval times, where they protected sleepers from cold drafts caused by poorly insulated rooms. Originally created from wood, which is less thermally conductive than stone or brick, their thicker end pillars kept them away from the wall, causing falling colder air to drop behind and under the bed rather than onto it. Nowadays, thanks to our better insulated homes, they serve more of an aesthetic purpose - but we’re so used to headboards, a bed without one can look a little strange!
