How do you clean a velvet sofa?

Velvet sofas are easy to clean, but it’s worth bearing a few things in mind to avoid damage to your upholstery. We don’t recommend using a vacuum cleaner on velvet, as it can damage deep pile fabrics. Instead, use a microfibre cloth or soft bristled brush to gently remove dust and dirt from your velvet sofa. Any spills should be soaked up immediately - and always pat or dab, don’t rub in liquids.

When buying a velvet sofa at DFS, you can add a Fabric Care Kit at checkout, which includes everything you need to maintain your sofa, as well as remove most common household stains. For more information on cleaning a velvet sofa, check out our Fabric Care Guide.

How durable is velvet for a sofa?

It might surprise you to learn that velvet is a very durable option when it comes to sofa fabrics. Most upholstery velvets are made from polyester, meaning they are particularly hardwearing and hold colour well - which is why velvet is often recommended to those who want a bold coloured sofa. All it generally takes to maintain a velvet sofa is a weekly wipe down and occasional brush to ensure the pile stays smooth and soft.

What is the best colour for a velvet sofa?

Take your pick! Unlike some fabrics and leathers, velvet works particularly well with bold coloured dyes, so it’s often seen in warm rusty oranges, jewel-toned emeralds, hot pinks, and ocean-blue teals. However, it can look just as stunning in classic black, grey, navy and cream - so whatever your thing, there’s a velvet to match.
