Here at DFS, we are very aware of the impact of upholstery and furniture on the environment and are committed to making a positive difference - both in the environment and our communities - by working with our suppliers and making changes to our operations.
Change takes time, so we will not be able to achieve this ambition overnight - but rest assured we are working hard on it! Through setting goals and working together across our group of companies, we are already making a positive difference in a range of areas our business practices impact upon.
As a furniture manufacturer and retailer, we know one of the biggest areas we can make is across the way we source the materials used to make our sofas, beds, mattresses and furniture. We are working hard to ensure all the materials used to make our products are responsibly, sustainably and ethically sourced. This means ensuring we have visibility of our entire value chain - right back to farm and forest.
Working with suppliers to ensure anyone connected to our product is treated and rewarded fairly for their work
Ensuring all products we sell that use wood in their manufacture will be made from FSC and PEFC-certified timber by 2025
Working to source all leather upholstery from LWG-certified suppliers
Working to source all textiles used on sofas from OEKO-TEX STeP-certified mills
Working to ensure all cotton used has Better Cotton traceability
Encouraging the use of recycled materials where suitable with all suppliers
Making changes to our products and value chain is an ongoing collaborative and iterative process. We work in partnership with our suppliers to ensure the changes we request are sustainable long-term and add value to their business - and that of their suppliers - while also ensuring we are being as ethical and sustainable as possible.
From sourcing timber sustainably to finding more eco-friendly fabrics and fillings, as a business we are committed to making a positive difference.
From fabrics and leathers to the springs and wood we use - we’re working hard to use more recycled, sustainably sourced, and vegan-friendly materials across our range of sofas and furniture. In some areas, this looks like creating ranges made from faster-growing or reclaimed woods - in others, creating upholstery fabrics that last longer in your home before needing to be replaced. As a business, DFS are committed to reducing our carbon emissions and are aligned to the climate-science Net Zero roadmap. While the majority of our carbon footprint is in the raw materials we use to make our products, we have still identified other areas where we can make an impact and reduce our impact on the planet as a whole. We’re committed to finding ways to reduce our carbon footprint by changing the way we do business - from switching to more eco-friendly energy sources in our stores and offices, to replacing our delivery fleet with electric vehicles.
We've calculated our full carbon footprint (scopes 1, 2 and 3) since 2019
We've reduced our Scope 1 emissions (gas used for heating and fuel used in our vehicles) by over 20% since 2019
We've engaged our suppliers on this issue, and many have committed to work with us to reduce the carbon footprint of our products
Sofa and furniture packaging is a delicate balance, as to be both sustainable and practical, it needs to both adequately protect the product in transit and be easy to responsibly dispose of once finished with. We are proud to say we recycle all the packaging used on our sofas. Our delivery teams install your new sofa in your room of choice, unpack it for you (and assemble if needed) and then remove all packaging, taking it away with them to recycle it responsibly. We’re working hard and continuously to further improve our packaging and select materials that are kinder to the environment.
We've introduced recycled plastic packaging in many of our ranges
We are working hard to ensure ALL plastic packaging is made from recycled content
We are aiming to remove all polystyrene from packaging by the end of 2024
We are working with suppliers to use more sustainable packaging where possible - for example, swapping from plastic to cardboard
This is just the beginning of our journey, and we understand there is always more we can be doing to be a more sustainable, responsible, environmentally aware business. We’re working hard to introduce new, ambitious changes to our product and customer offer to improve the impact of our business.
