Read on for a step-by-step guide on measuring for a corner sofa.
Firstly, decide on where your corner sofa will fit best.
Corner sofa dimensions typically fit nice and snug into, well, a corner! But rules are made to be broken, which is why we make sure our corner sofas look good from the back, as well as the front. You could use your corner sofa as a room divider in an open-plan space, or create a social area by having your U-shaped sofa encircle a coffee table.
Whatever your thing is, pick out where you’d like your corner sofa to go before anything else.
Now you’ve settled on the perfect placement for your corner sofa, it’s time to utilise that measuring tape and see what corner sofa dimensions you have space for.
First, measure the space you have available for the horizontal back of the corner sofa. You want to measure from where the corner crease of the sofa would be, and you’ll need to take two measurements to get the length and depth. Then, measure the free space for the 90-degree outwards section of the corner sofa.
Up next, you need to know the depth of the whole sofa. To do this, first measure outwards from the corner crease would be - do this at 45-degree angle from the measurements you took in the previous step.
Knowing the measurements is just half of the job. Sometimes being able to visualise the amount of space your corner sofa dimensions will take up can help too.
This is really simple to do. Just take some old newspaper or scraps of paper and a bit of masking tape (this can be done without masking tape if you have none to hand) and lay them out following the measurements you just took. This way, you’ll get a look at how large or small your new corner sofa will feel in your space.
Make sure you can open any doors without hitting the back of the sofa, and that you can fit comfortably between the sofa and any coffee tables you plan to use.
Now for the fun bit: it’s time to shop! Leather L-shaped sofa or a corner recliner sofa? Or maybe even a corner sofa bed. The choice is all yours!
Perhaps you’d love the added benefits of a corner sofa bed, which can host overnight guests just as comfortably through the night as during the day. Or maybe the kick-back comfort of a recliner corner sofa has you inspired to plan movie marathons in ultimate comfort. It might even be that you’re just struggling to decide between a fabric or leather corner sofa.

Measuring for a U-shaped sofa is the same as measuring for a corner sofa – except, with U-shaped sofas, you have an additional cosy corner to think about.
Similar to measuring for a corner sofa, you want to measure the length, depth, and height you have available. We recommend you start from the corner crease, measuring how much space you have for the horizontal back of the sofa, before moving on to measuring both the left and right outward corners.
Make sure you measure how much space you have available for the depth of the sofa. That means measuring from the back of the sofa to the tip of each corner, and then measuring again from the back of the middle section to the end of the middle section. This ensures you have space for that lovely coffee table we know you’ve spotted!
When you hear that knock at the door and your dream corner sofa is waiting at your doorstep, you want to be sure you can get it down the corridor or up the stairs to your living room.
Many of our corner sofas come with detachable arms or backs, or break apart into multiple pieces for ease. But it can be handy to measure the width of any corridors or doorways your sofa will have to go through, before reaching its final destination.
All DFS sofas are delivered by our expert delivery team, who will carefully bring your sofa to the room of your choice and assemble it for you. However, they can only deliver to a space they can get to! We advise clearing corridors and staircases for easy access, and making sure any doorways are wide enough for your new sofa to fit through.
Now you know how to measure for a corner sofa, it’s time to shop our fantastic range of corner sofas. Alternatively, check out how you can accessorise your brand new sofa to add your own personal touch.
