How to measure for a corner sofa
A sofa isn’t just a piece of furniture - it’s the heart of your living room. Before you can dive into cosy curled-up evenings and movie marathons, it’s time to grab the measuring tape. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure your corner sofa will be the perfect fit:
First, choose where your corner sofa will go. Corner sofa dimensions typically fit nice and snug into, well, a corner! But rules are made to be broken - you could use your corner sofa as a room divider in an open-plan space, or create a social area by having your U-shaped sofa encircle a coffee table. Whatever your thing is, pick out where you’d like your corner sofa to go before anything else.
2. Measure your space
Now you’ve picked the perfect spot, it’s time to measure your living room to see what size of sofa you have space for. The three key dimensions to measure are:
Back length: Measure from where you’d want the corner crease of the sofa to be, all the way to the desired endpoint.
Depth: Measure outward from where you’d like to place the back of the sofa.
Extension length: For L-shaped designs, measure the additional chaise-end or similar longer seat to make sure it fits in the space you have.
Knowing the measurements is just half of the job. Sometimes being able to visualise the amount of space your corner sofa dimensions will take up can help too. To get a feel for how much room your sofa will take up, outline the dimensions using masking tape or newspaper. This way, you’ll get a better look at how large or small your new corner sofa will feel in your space. This also helps to ensure there’s enough clearance for doors, coffee tables, and walkways - no more bumping shins!
4. Pick your perfect corner sofa
Now for the fun part - choosing your dream sofa!

How do I measure for a u-shaped sofa?
Measuring for a U-shaped sofa is the same as measuring for a corner sofa – except, with u-shaped sofas, you have an additional cosy corner to think about.
Similar to measuring for a corner sofa, you want to measure the length, depth, and height you have available. We recommend you start from the corner crease, measuring how much space you have for the horizontal back of the sofa, before moving on to measuring both the left and right outward corners.
Make sure you measure how much space you have available for the depth of the sofa. That means measuring from the back of the sofa to the tip of each corner and then measuring again from the back of the middle section to the end of the middle section.
How do I move a corner sofa through my home?
All DFS sofas are delivered by our expert delivery team, who will carefully bring your sofa to the room of your choice and assemble it for you. However, they can only deliver to a space they can get to! We advise clearing corridors and staircases for easy access and making sure any doorways are wide enough for your new sofa to fit through.
Also, bear in mind that many of our corner sofas come with detachable arms or backs, or break apart into multiple pieces for ease.
