Absolutely! My career path is far from what you might expect from a Group Technology Director, especially for a woman in this field. I didn't take the typical route. In fact, I left school at 16 without a tech-related degree. My initial ambition was to become a Navy Engineer, but my parents nudged me towards getting a "real job". So, I ventured into a 35-year journey that brought me to the intersection of retail and tech
In my 26 years at Boots, I wore many hats, from operations to project and program management. I even ventured into consulting. My journey also led me into the world of web development, where I played a significant role in the transformation of Boots' online presence. It was during this time that I had the chance to meet Tim and Russ and thrive in the unique work-hard-play-hard culture.
After my time at Boots, I was ready for new challenges and spent 3.5 years at Wilko. Then an opportunity at DFS piqued my interest. Familiar with the culture created by Tim and Russ, I felt that I thrived in that environment, so I made the switch. I've been fortunate to join a company with a clear vision that is truly welcoming, and I always hear from newcomers how warm the welcome is for everyone.
In terms of technology at DFS, the journey has been quite a ride. We've worked on cutting-edge projects and introduced systems and processes to set up the foundations and roadmap for the future. The IT function has grown and evolved, maturing with the business, with defined processes to deliver tangible business value.
As a Group Technology Director, I've realised that it's not about having formal technology qualifications. It's about being willing to seize those opportunities and constantly developing both myself and those around me. I never aspired to be a director, but it's truly fulfilling to focus on developing the people around me and pushing the business forward. So hey who knows, maybe I will be a Chief Technology Officer one day!
The future of technology is full of promise and challenges. Data accuracy is paramount, and AI is both exciting and somewhat daunting. Automation is a significant game-changer that can make life easier for our colleagues and enhance the customer experience. The Group Technology Platform strategy at DFS is particularly exciting, as it focuses on laying strong foundations and simplifying processes.
I've recently moved to a new home, and I have to say I’ve found a good work-life balance that works for me. I go into the office three days a week. I live in the countryside, where I have dogs and horses. I enjoy training the horses, it’s a great way to unwind and switch off from work. I have grown-up kids, so my animals are my "babies." Plus, my parents live close (very close, in the same house), we're a close-knit family, which is wonderful.
