What is the best mattress?

The best mattress for you is really very personal, and depends on your body, how you sleep, and if you struggle with any particular issues at night - like back pain or getting too hot - which is why we offer so many options. However, if you’re looking to invest in the best of the best, we’d recommend checking out brands like Sealy, Harrison Spinks and Silentnight, who all incorporate years of mattress-making experience with cutting-edge science to create some of the best mattresses available in the UK.

What are the different types of mattress?

Everyone has different needs and preferences when sleeping, so naturally there are many different types of mattresses to suit all kinds of sleepers. Some of the most popular mattress types are: Pocket sprung mattresses which are filled with springs in individual pockets, to spread weight evenly across the mattress and isolate movement. Memory foam mattresses said to be the most supportive type of mattress, and are designed to mould to your body over time to give you support where you need it most.

Then there are Open coil mattresses which are a more affordable option whilst still offering a good comfort level for smaller budgets. Gel mattresses which offer extra airflow for those who tend to get too hot at night. Combination mattresses use two or more types of mattress fillings in the same mattress meaning they work together to deliver the benefits of both; for example, pocket sprung and memory foam. And Boxed or rolled mattresses which are super convenient, and come tightly rolled and delivered in small packages. Making them ideal for apartment living or those who need to get their mattress up multiple flights of stairs

What are the different mattress firmness options?

Mattress firmnesses range from soft mattresses at one end of the spectrum, offering the ultimate in sink-in sleeping, to firm mattresses at the other, which deliver much more support. Of course, not everyone wants an extreme of the scale - and our most popular firmness levels are medium soft mattresses, medium mattresses, and medium firm mattresses, which all offer degrees of both ends of the scale. For more guidance on choosing the right firmness for you, check out our mattress buying guide, or pop into your local DFS store to try out some of the options.

Which mattress brands are available?

As well as our own DFS branded mattresses, we stock a variety of popular mattress brands for you to choose from, with options to suit all budgets. Explore heritage British mattress brands like Silentnight, Harrison Spinks and Sleepeezee, or innovative, science-backed Sealy. Our range of Stompa mattresses is ideal for kids and teens, and the great value mattresses from Jay-Be and Boxit can help you find a quality mattress that fits within your budget. We even stock an exclusive range of mattresses and beds created in partnership with Joules.

What mattress size should I get?

If you’re shopping for a brand new mattress and bed, there are plenty of size options to choose from. Single mattresses are great for children, teenagers or simply rooms with less space - small double mattresses are also great for saving space, and suit single adults who want a little extra room. Although fine for a couple occasionally, like a guest bed, small double mattresses are a bit too much of a squeeze for a couple’s everyday bed. A standard double mattress or a king size mattress is a much better option for a couple - or if you have the space, there’s few better feelings than stretching out on a super king size mattress at the end of a long day.
