What is a single mattress?

A single mattress is the smallest standard sized mattress recommended for adults in the UK. They’re a great option if you are limited on floorspace or budget, coming in at a much lower price point than their double or king size mattress counterparts.

What size is a single mattress?

The standard single mattress size is 3 feet wide by 6 feet 3 inches in length, or 90cm wide and 190cm in length. Here at DFS we use the UK standard sizes for beds and mattresses, so you can be sure that all our single mattresses will fit all our single beds. You just need to be mindful of the height of the mattress - this does vary, and some extra thick mattresses will peek above the ends of lower footboards, which might not be the look you’re going for.

Are single mattresses suitable for kids?

Single mattresses are a great option for kids getting their first grown-up bed, as at 3 feet wide, they can be a suitable size for them for a long time to come, right through their teenage years and even into adulthood. However, if you’re looking for a smaller option - perhaps you’re limited on space, or want a softer transition from a cot bed to a big bed - we also stock smaller kids single mattresses and beds, which measure just 2 feet 6 inches - or 75cm - in width, and are often closer to the floor.

Is a single mattress ok for an adult?

Absolutely, a single bed mattress is a perfectly good option for an adult, particularly when you are limited on floorspace. However, as both single and double mattresses are only 6’3” long, taller people in particular may struggle to get comfortable - for anyone over 6 feet tall, we would recommend a king size mattress, which at 6’6”, offers those few extra inches that make all the difference.

Which single bed mattress is best?

It all depends on what you are looking for in a single mattress! Is it an affordable single mattress? The convenience of a boxed or rolled single mattress? The comfort of a luxury pocket sprung or hybrid single mattress? For some, the science-backed Sealy posturepedic single mattresses will be the best option - while others might prefer the convenience of a Silentnight Just Sleep rolled mattress.
