Corner sofas

Looking for a sofa that actually fits your life? Here’s the great thing about a corner sofa from DFS: they’re made with you in mind. We’ve got a huge range of silhouettes, from compact L-shaped designs to sprawling U-shaped layouts, in a range of fabrics, colours, and finishes to match your space. Here at DFS, you can always find a sofa that perfectly suits your décor thing.

How do I choose the right corner sofa for my living room?

Start with your layout. Where will a corner sofa sit best? Tucked into a corner to leave space in the centre of the room? Floating in the middle to zone an open-plan space? Visualise how people will move around it. If you can, mark out the sofa’s footprint on the floor with masking tape. You’ll instantly see how much space it really takes up, and whether you can still walk to the kitchen without doing a sideways shuffle.

Then comes the fun part: choosing your sofa. Start with colour. A soft neutral cream or grey sofa is effortlessly versatile and gives you the freedom to switch up cushions and accessories whenever you fancy a refresh. Feeling braver? Deep blue sofas, emerald pieces or terracotta fabrics automatically bring vibrancy to your space, while helping the seating area feel more defined.

Fabric matters too. Sofas crafted from hardwearing fabrics, like our Resilience sofas, are great for busy homes with kids, pets, or plenty of guests.

“Think about how you’ll actually use the sofa day to day. If it’s where the family piles in every evening, go for durable, easy-care fabric. If it’s more of a statement piece in a grown-up living room, you can afford to be braver with colour or texture.” Paul Freeman – Care and Service

How should I arrange cushions and style my corner sofa?

Styling your corner sofa is a chance to let your own creativity shine.

Kick things off with a base of larger cushions in a colour that ties in with your sofa. Go for colours in similar shades. For example, if your sofa is a warm colour like beige or cream, go for burgundy or cinnamon cushions.

Then layer in smaller cushions with texture or pattern to add contrast. Mix materials – think velvet with linen, or boucle with cotton – to stop your sofa from looking one-dimensional. For a little touch of added cosiness, drape a blanket over the corner of your sofa. This will soften the shape of your sofa and make sinking in so irresistibly inviting.

What is the difference between left-hand and right-hand corner sofas?

Generally, if you’re stood facing the sofa and the longer section extends to your left, like our French Connection Carlisle left hand facing sofa, it’s a left-hand corner sofa. If it extends to your right, like our House Beautiful Sophia right hand facing sofa, it’s a right-hand one. This applies to standard corner sofas with two solid arms as well as open end corner group style sofas. The exception to this is chaise sofas, where right or left refers to the position of the chaise.

Getting the orientation of your corner sofa is important, especially if it’s going against a wall. Measure carefully and picture the layout in your space before you order. A little planning now makes all the difference later.

How do I measure and position an L-shape sofa in my room?

Looking at buying an L-shaped sofa, like our Ada sofa? Then it’s time to get the tape measure out. Don’t worry, this bit is easier than it sounds.

First rule? Measure everything: the width, the height, the depth. Then measure your doorways, hallways, and staircases too. (Future you will be very grateful.)

When it comes to positioning, give your corner sofa room to breathe. Aim for around 60–75cm of clear walkway space so the room feels open and never cramped.

Do corner sofas come apart?

Not all corner sofas come apart, but many of ours do - with removable backs or split bases, which make delivery easier. Some DFS ranges, like Sofables, are built to be modular. That means they come in separate sections you can clip, slot, or rearrange however you like.

“Choosing a modular corner sofa gives you options. If your space changes or you move home, you can adapt the layout rather than start from scratch. It’s flexibility built into the design.” Kellie Wyles – Buying and Brands Expert

Want the chaise on the other side? Go for it. Fancy switching an L-shape into a U, or splitting the pieces to create extra seating when guests arrive? No problem. These sofas aren’t made to limit you. They fit around real life adapting to your space, your style, and whatever thing the day calls for.
